1. Think about what you plan to do with it
You can find witch cauldrons in all shapes and sizes, so in the end it all comes down to what uses you want to give to it.
For example, they can be used to simply burn incense, place small offerings or burn little pieces of paper. On those cases, you can buy the smaller versions, which not only are practical for apartments or small spaces but also are incredibly cute!
On the other hand, if you plan to prepare magical recipes, teas or potions, you will need a large cast iron cauldron that is suitable for cooking.

Some metals and other materials can be toxic to ingest, so you wouldn’t want to cook anything on them. They aren’t as expensive as you think and with proper care, they will last you a lifetime!

You had your eyes set on a beautiful cauldron and are impatiently waiting for it… but how do you use it? and how do you even take care of it?
How to Season and Clean your Cast Iron Cauldron
First things first! You want to clean your witch cauldron not only from actual dirt but also from unwanted energies. There are many ways to do this, such as leaving your cauldron under the rain or using water from other natural sources, such as springs, lakes or the ocean. Alternatively, you can use the smoke of incense or herbs to cleanse it.
Once you have “reset” the energies of your new cauldron, it’s time to season it. This is a very important step if you plan on putting any liquids inside or use it for cooking, as it creates a non-stick barrier and prevents rust from appearing over time.
To do this, use soap and water to clean your cauldron thoroughly and make sure it’s completely dry. After this, apply a thin and even coat of vegetable shortening or lard all over it, including the outside, bottom and legs.
Heat your oven at 300º F (around 150ºC), place a tray at the bottom to catch any possible residue and your cauldron inside for 1 hour. Then, turn the oven off and once it’s completely cool, wipe the excess oil. Repeat the same process one more time, but placing the cauldron upside down. For optimal maintenance, make sure to do this every season!
Remember to clean your cauldron immediately after every use by scrubbing it with salt and hot water and make sure it’s completely dry before storing it. Traditionally, using soap isn’t recommended.
Uses of your Witch Cauldron
A witch cauldron has infinite possibilities, apart from the obvious ones like cooking potions and casting spells. Here are some examples:
- Incense or candleholder: Remember to add some sand or pebbles inside to give the incense sticks or tealight candles some stability!
- Put food or other offerings to your gods/goddesses inside and place it in your altar.
- Scrying: fill it with water and see what its reflection tells you. You can also drip some candle wax into the water and do ceromancy instead.
- Make Moon water or collect rain for your spells.
- Incorporate it in the Equinoxes and Solstices celebrations: unfortunately, not everybody has a fireplace or a garden to build a bonfire, so a cauldron is a great alternative to celebrate these special days. Simply, use charcoal discs, little twigs and dry leaves and remember to be safe!
